Covid-19: State rep mulls hauling Top Glove to court, claims virus spread to locals

A Selangor state representative is mulling taking Top Glove to court for continuing to operate its factories in Klang.

This came as the Teratai Covid-19 infection cluster linked to the company operations there have snowballed to a total of 5,056 positive cases as of yesterday.

According to Mohd Fakhrulrazi Mohd Mokhtar (above), who is Meru assemblyperson, the cluster is no longer contained to just the company's workers but has spread to the local community.

"Based on the information I have received so far, at least 11 Meru residents have been infected by Covid-19. These are people who live within the areas which have been placed under an enhanced movement control order (MCO).

"We are waiting for the Health Ministry's official announcement to see today's figure," he told Malaysiakini.

The Teratai cluster was first disclosed to the public on Nov 7. At that time, the number of positive cases from it stood at 74 individuals.

The number had since spiked, forcing the government to impose a 14-day lockdown on a location in Meru that houses Top Glove hostels for workers. The order had since been extended for another two weeks until Dec 14.

The order, however, did not include Top Glove factories. Authorities had on Nov 23 ordered the company to close all its 28 factories in Klang, to be done in stages, and to test all of its workers for the virus.

Yesterday, the cluster became the largest contributor to the daily total of Covid-19 positive cases in the country, recording 778 cases (or 52.9 percent) of the total 1,472 cases.

"As far as I know, there are (Top Glove) factories that are still in operation. I am hoping that they will shut down all operations temporarily.

"We will continue to pressure them (into doing so). And I am thinking of taking legal action against Top Glove on behalf of the people of Meru," said Fakhrulrazi.

Malaysiakini has reached out to an agency that handles public relations for Top Glove to seek the company's comments on the matter. - Mkini
