DG Hisham explains how frontliners at Klang, Serdang hospitals got Covid-19

COVID-19 | Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has reminded healthcare workers to be diligent in adhering to standard operating procedures (SOPs) after hundreds contracted Covid-19 while in the line of duty.

As of Dec 18, 280 medical frontliners have been infected while 1,697 have been quarantined after coming into close contact with positive cases.

At a press conference this evening, Hisham shared that healthcare workers at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) in Klang, Selangor contracted the virus from two clusters - the Batu Sembilan cluster and the Yayasan cluster.

“When they are infected and when they have symptoms, they (healthcare workers) should not come to the hospital and should take leave.

“But some who are infected and have symptoms still come to the hospitals. And some don’t wear a facemask for example, so the infections end up happening at the hospital.

“This is a reminder to all individuals and healthcare workers to follow SOPs,” he said.

The top official said HTAR recorded 10 cases as a result of the Batu Sembilan cluster. This was sparked after the infection spread from the community to the hospital’s Dietetics and Catering Department (Unit Sajian).

As of 12noon today, the cluster had two active cases while the remaining 22 cases had been discharged.

Sixty infections at HTAR are attributed to the Yayasan cluster. This was sparked after a healthcare worker contracted Covid-19 from a haemodialysis patient and spread it to hospital colleagues.

As of noon today, the cluster had a total of 101 cases - 82 remain active while 17 have been discharged. The cluster has recorded two deaths.

HTAR, which does not treat Covid-19 cases, has recorded a total of 122 cases.

Serdang Hospital cases

The top official also shared that healthcare workers at Hospital Serdang in Selangor became infected after coming into contact with an elderly patient from an old folks’ home.

The infections at the non-Covid-19 hospital are linked to the Lestari cluster.

As of noon today, the cluster recorded three new cases.

Of the total 56 cases in the cluster, 31 remain active while 25 have been discharged.

Eighty cases at Hospital Sungai Buloh

Hospital Sungai Buloh, which exclusively treats Covid-19 cases, has recorded 80 cases among healthcare workers.

Hisham did not provide any breakdown or details about the outbreak.

He did, however, mention the Impian cluster - which includes a total of 17 cases from the Gombak and Petaling districts. Two remain active while 15 cases have been discharged.

Malaysiakini has enquired about the link between Hospital Sungai Buloh and the Impian cluster. - Mkini
