Dr M offers to testify in Azmin's Sheraton Move suit

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has offered to be a witness in the civil suit brought by 10 Gombak constituents against their parliamentarian, Azmin Ali, for breaching his promise made to voters during the last general election.

In a statement today, the former prime minister said he is willing to help if his testimony is needed in court.

"I was advised by my lawyer that the action was taken as Azmin was said to have breached his oath of allegiance as an MP, neglecting the trust of the voters for personal interest, disregarding his own promise made during the 14th general election and committed the tort of deceit.

"The people's representatives, or parliamentarians, must understand that people choose us as their representative to speak for them in Parliament and lead them, instead of serving our own interest for the sake of power and position," he said.

"The court is the most appropriate forum to verify the plaintiffs' accusations. I see the courage of these people questioning the credibility and integrity of an MP like Azmin as a maturing of our country's democratic process.

"I am willing to offer myself as a witness in court if my testimony is needed," added Mahathir.

In the statement of claim, the plaintiffs claimed that Azmin had violated their trust by working with BN in the "Sheraton Move" political coup which resulted in the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government despite campaigning and winning his seat on a PKR/Harapan ticket.

They asserted that Azmin had further violated his duty by "causing his own expulsion from PKR" and joining the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

Azmin is now a Bersatu member and the minister for international trade and industry. - Mkini
