Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri has clarified that festival greetings are allowed on a product if its purpose is not for display in halal-certified premises.
His explanation came following an incident involving a bakery shop which delivered a pre-ordered cake with "Happy Holidays" greeting instead of "Merry Christmas" as originally requested by the client.
MalaysiaNow reported that the bakery owner had to follow the rules set by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) as part of the application process for getting halal certification.
Jakim today had also released a statement to explain the matter.
In his tweet, Zulkifli said a festival greeting is allowed on a product if its purpose is not for display in halal-certified premises as well as on products with the halal logo.
"If Shop B, which has a Jakim's halal certificate, prepares a cake with a festival greeting for a display purpose in the premise, it is not allowed.
"But if it prepares a cake pre-ordered by A and there's a festival greeting on the cake, it is allowed," he said. - Mkini
