SETIU: Floods in Terengganu worsened as 8,620 people were evacuated to relief centres following continuous rain.

Rescue agencies are preparing for an increase in the number of evacuees in the two east coast states as the last episode of the high tide phenomenon was expected to result in water stagnation early tomorrow morning.

In Kemaman, 6,623 people from 1,572 families have been evacuated to 28 flood relief centres and in Dungun, 663 people from 186 families have sought shelter at 15 relief centres as at 4pm.

In Setiu, the number of flood victims stood at 11 people from three families who have been temporarily placed in one relief centre.

In Hulu Terengganu, 106 people from 25 families have been evacuated to three flood relief centres.

Terengganu disaster management committee secretariat chief lieutenant colonel (PA) Che Adam A Rahman said the last episode of high tide was expected to occur early morning tomorrow.

"The situation now is that water levels have receded upstream and flowing to the river basin in Kemaman.

"The occurrance of the high tide will cause stagnation of water and will flood low lying areas downstream.

"Rescue agencies are on alert for the next phase of evacuation," he said. - NST
