IPOH: Former Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu made a surprise appearance at a tree-planting ceremony at the Housing Trust here Saturday (Dec 12).

It was the first public appearance by the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) deputy president and state party chairman since resigning his post last week during the political impasse.

Dressed casually in T-shirt and jeans while looking his jovial self, Faizal was accompanying his wife, Datin Seri Dr Nomee Ashikin Mohammed Radzi, who was the guest-of-honour at the ceremony here.

Meeting reporters after the ceremony, he said he was alright.

“In many ways, it’s a relief... It was not easy being Mentri Besar, ” he said.

“I’m doing good, thanks for asking, ” he added.

He said Bersatu has submitted a few names as candidates for state executive council posts.

“We have discussed with the new Mentri Besar to propose a few names to be considered by the Perak Sultan.

“There’s not many of us. Most likely I’m not one of them, ” he added.

When asked whether would he be taking up some positions at the federal level, he said he would perform his duty as Tambun MP.

“I am also the Chenderiang assemblyman and I will perform my duty.

“There are enough tasks for me, no time for other things, ” he added.

Faizal had during the state assembly sitting earlier this month lost a motion of confidence.

This led to him resigning, followed by the appointment of Datuk Saarani Mohamad as his successor.

Saarani, the Kota Tampan assemblyman and state Umno chairman, was sworn in on Thursday (Dec 10).

The tree-planting ceremony was launched by Ipoh Datuk Bandar Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.

It was part of the “Green the Earth” campaign organised by Ipoh city councillor Dr Richard Ng and the Lions Club of Perak Silver State. - Star
