Jeram assemblyperson Mohd Shaid Rosli said local residents in Puncak Alam are only objecting to the sale of liquor at a newly-opened Jaya Grocer outlet and not other non-halal products.
Shaid said this after the supermarket shut its non-halal section following a memorandum he submitted on behalf of residents, asking that the store "respect the sensitivities of the 90 percent Muslim population in Puncak Alam".
Shahid explained that the store had shut the entire non-halal section because its liquor and other non-halal products were placed together but believed that they would be reopened once the liquor is removed.
"I explained to the management that the Puncak Alam residents' objection is on alcoholic beverages.
"There were no objections to the sale of non-halal food at Jaya Grocer if they followed the standard operating procedure with a separate counter.
"The residents understand and respect non-Muslims' choice of food. They only want the area to be free of alcoholic drinks," he said.
Shaid, who is an independent assemblyperson aligned to the yet-to-be-registered Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), said he hoped that his explanation would clear the air on the issue. - Mkini
