The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has suspended the "BermanaTV" parody Twitter account (@Bermanadotcon) which was found to be in violation of the community standards set by the social media platform.
MCMC stated that the displays on the account have often confused the public as the parody resembles the name of national news agency Bernama.
“MCMC appreciates the action taken by Twitter based on the complaints filed by MCMC.
"However, the suspension or deletion of the account is reactive and temporary. Such accounts are likely to be re-created and the public needs to be vigilant so as not to be easily influenced," it said in a statement today.
The commission reminded the public that they can verify the authenticity of their information by following official channels and social media accounts that bear blue or grey official verification logo from platform providers such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
According to the statement, the badge recognises social media accounts originating from organisations and individuals that have been verified.
“MCMC will continue to advise the public to be wary of the existence of fake accounts on social media.
"False accounts were deliberately created to protect their true identities for the purpose of cheating, raising suspicions and dividing society," it added. - Mkini
