KUALA LUMPUR: Pas has changed its mind regarding its assemblymen meeting with the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, hours after cancelling the audience with the king yesterday.

Pas secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said in a statement that the change of heart was because the Sultan had instructed all Pas assemblymen to meet him at the state palace.

"Regarding the (assemblymen's) attendance at the Perak Palace, since Pas does not want to make mistakes in making a decision, especially one that involves a decree made by the Sultan, Pas has sent out instructions to all assemblymen to be at the palace after receiving a decree by the Sultan for an audience with him.

"Pas is a party that always respects and upholds the sovereignty of the monarchical institution and will always ensure that all matters related to it are pursued with great care and courtesy.

"Pas will make efforts together with its friends in Perikatan Nasional to resolve the Perak political crisis prudently for the sake of the future of the religion, race and country," he said in a statement last night.

Initially, Sultan Nazrin had summoned assemblymen from Pas and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia to an audience at 3pm yesterday to ascertain their position in the selection of a new Perak menteri besar.

However, it was reported that Pas ordered its Perak state lawmakers to decline the audience, and according to state news agency Bernama, Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria said the order came from the party's leadership.

Earlier yesterday, the sultan met with Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who was believed to have nominated Perak Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Saarani Mohamad to be the next MB.

After the audience, Ahmad Zahid asserted that the nominee possessed majority support among Perak assemblymen, but declined to confirm if this includes lawmakers from PN parties, Bersatu and Pas.

The sultan is selecting a replacement for Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu who was ousted as the Perak MB through a vote of confidence by Umno assemblymen.

Also yesterday, Perak DAP had publicly expressed its willingness to partner with its enemy for decades, Umno, to form a new state government, although this came attached with conditions such as the inclusion of other Pakatan Harapan parties in the state. - NST
