PAS-led Yadim pushes to get plus-size pageant cancelled

Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim), a government-linked organisation set up to promote Islam, is pushing for a plus-size pageant scheduled to be held in January next year to be scrapped.

Yadim chairperson Nasrudin Hassan said his organisation objects to the Miss/Mrs Plus World Malaysia 2020 Grand Final Gala Night to be held at Sunway Putra Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 2.

He added that Yadim will be submitting a memorandum to the organiser and local authorities to express its disapproval.

"(The memo) is evidence of this organisation's commitment to object against any programmes that are not beneficial," Nasrudin said in a statement today.

The PAS syura council member stated that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's government won't be sending the right signals if the event is allowed to proceed.

"The organising of such events sends the wrong signal and appears as if the prime minister approves of such programmes when in fact, we know the prime minister is very serious in stopping all activities that do not contribute to the building of character and good values," he said.

Nasrudin added that all religions, particularly Islam, should not allow such events, calling it "exploitative" of women and a form of "hedonistic" culture.

"Yadim is confident that the majority, regardless of race and religion, do not condone such programmes that do not benefit the majority and courts Allah's anger."

Furthermore, Nasrudin cited the Covid-19 pandemic as a reason it should not be held, even though organisers have given assurance on complying with the Health Ministry's standard operating procedure.

Yesterday, the government announced that sports and recreational events will be allowed to resume starting next year in areas under the recovery movement control order (MCO).

Yadim was set up by the government in 1974 to promote the propagation of Islam. It is under the religion section of the Prime Minister's Department.

Nasrudin was appointed as the organisation's chairperson in July, replacing Amanah's Nik Omar Nik Abdul Aziz after the Perikatan Nasional government took over following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan ruling coalition. - Mkini
