Perak DAP chief: Alliance with Umno proves DAP not anti-Malay

 

Perak DAP's readiness to forge an alliance with Umno proves that the party is not anti-Malay or anti-Islam.

Its chairperson Nga Kor Ming stressed that the party has decided to work with Umno to form a stable and multiracial state government.

In a statement, Nga highlighted two points concerning the cooperation.

"DAP's readiness to work with Umno proves two things: that DAP is magnanimous and willing to put the welfare of the people as the main agenda.

"Second, the accusation that DAP is anti-Malay or anti-Islam is not true at all," he said.

DAP is the second-largest party in the 59-seat Perak state assembly with 16 assemblypersons, while Umno has 25.

The political turmoil in Perak was sparked by Ahmad Faizal Azumu losing a confidence vote in the state assembly mooted by Umno on Friday, forcing him to resign as menteri besar. 

Subsequently, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi remarked that the party was talking to all parties about forming a new coalition state government.

PKR and Amanah were open to the idea but imposed a condition that their participation must be made en bloc with DAP.

Likewise, Nga said DAP will not join the formation of the new state government without its Pakatan Harapan component parties. 

The Teluk Intan MP added that a written agreement would be signed if both DAP and Umno agreed to the alliance.

"It should be stressed that DAP's readiness to cooperate with Umno is based on the main principle to form a state government which is multiracial, with integrity, and based on good governance.

"If the proposal to the cooperation is agreed to, a written agreement must be inked," he said.

It's still unclear whether the cooperation will materialise as Umno, in its supreme council meeting yesterday, reiterated its wish to uphold its cooperation with PAS and Bersatu. - Mkini
