Perak Sultan accepts resignation of MB, excos

Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah has accepted the resignation of Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu from the post as well as that of the whole state exco-line up.

In a statement released by Royal Comptroller Abd Rahim Mohamad Nor, the Palace said that Sultan Nazrin met with Faizal at 3pm yesterday at Istana Kinta in Ipoh.

"Following the loss of majority support in a vote of confidence during the third meeting of the third year of the Perak state assembly sitting on Dec 4, Faizal presented a letter informing that his position as menteri besar of Perak was affected based on the provisions of Clause (1) of Article XII, and paragraph (a) of Clause (2) Article XVI (6), First Part of the Constitution of the State Government of Perak Darul Ridzuan.

"With that, he expressed his desire to resign as menteri besar along with members of the executive council."

In accepting the resignation, the sultan expressed his gratitude to the Chenderiang state assemblypersonwho had performed the duties of menteri besar since May 12, 2018, noting that Faizal took the oath of office twice - firstly on May 12, 2018, and secondly on March 13, 2020.

"His Majesty also expresses his gratitude to all members of the state executive council for the services provided during this period," read the statement.

It is believed that Perak Umno was unhappy with Faizal, especially over the unilateral appointment of an Umno assemblyperson as his political secretary.

However, it is unclear whether Umno has the numbers to form the next state government.

The party has 25 state seats. Thirty seats are needed to form a state government.

Bersatu - which has five seats - is stung over the move to remove Faizal, while PAS - which has three seats - has said it would not join in efforts to form the next state government.

If Umno can't secure enough support from its own members and PAS, it will have to reach across the aisle to cobble support from Pakatan Harapan. - Mkini
