'Star' team scores big in Bar Council election

Candidates from a single camp swept up the majority of posts for the 2021/2022 Bar Council leadership, following a recently-concluded nationwide election.

According to a report from Free Malaysia Today, lawyers across the country yesterday voted in candidates from the “Star” team to nine out of 12 positions in the Bar Council.

A total of twenty-seven candidates took part in the election.

The online news portal today reported that this contrasted with last year’s election results when six candidates from different teams were voted.

Out of the “Star” team, senior lawyer Hendon Mohamed swept up 2,952 votes.

The other eight “Star” members in the new line-up are Karen Cheah Yee Lynn, Roger Tan, Honey Tan, HR Dipendra, New Sin Yew, Farez Jinnah, B Anand Raj, and Surendra Ananth.

The remaining three Bar Council posts were taken up by three members of the “One Bar For All” team, namely Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, Roger Chan, and Murshidah Mustafa.

FMT reported that incumbents who lost the election were Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab and council members Yusfarizal Yussoff and Syazlin Mansor.

It reported that Anand Raj, Farez and Surendra succeeded for the first time after previous unsuccessful bids.

The results were announced by scrutineers Ahmad Moosdeen, Zainudin Ismail and Krishna V Dallumah last night, following the counting and verification of postal ballots.

A total of 20,653 ballots were issued nationwide, with 5,647 valid votes received.

It was reported that the term of the 38 current members of the Bar Council would expire at the upcoming annual general meeting (AGM) on March 13, next year.

The new Bar Council will comprise the 12 newly elected members, the immediate past president and vice-president, the chairpersons of the respective 12 state Bar committees, and 12 state Bar representatives.

After the AGM, they will meet immediately to elect a new president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer among themselves. - Mkini
