A Pakatan Harapan lawmaker has mooted a political moratorium so that the opposition and government can work together and steer the country through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ong Kian Ming (Harapan-Bangi) said this would solve the impasse where no one in the Dewan Rakyat commands a majority to become prime minister.
"It's an open secret that Pagoh (Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin) doesn't have a majority... and many are frustrated with Pagoh over bad crisis leadership.
"I'm confident that if Port Dickson (opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim) had the opportunity to become prime minister, he would do a better job than Pagoh, and that some on the (government) side could also do better than Pagoh.
"But we all know, none of us have a majority. So, my suggestion is, why not have a Covid-19 moratorium agreement (CMA)?" he told the Dewan Rakyat today.
He said the CMA - not a confidence and supply agreement - would allow MPs on both sides to work together to get Covid-19 under control and heal the economy.
"Then after one year or six months - the leaders can decide - we fight in the 15th general election.
"But for the meantime, we have to work together," he added.
He acknowledged this was a difficult thing to do as many in the opposition felt betrayed by those in government, but that this was the right direction.
He said this doesn't mean the opposition will not check and balance the government, but said the public does a better job at criticism these days.
"Criticising the government, ministers, that's easy. There are many things to criticise, from 'Spanish fly', 'warm water', durian feasts, going to Paris.
"But I think the public is better than MPs at criticising the actions and words of the government and opposition," he said.
Muhyiddin is believed to have lost the majority support of the Dewan Rakyat after a faction in Umno withdrew support for the prime minister.
However, this has yet to be tested and proven.
Ong is the bi-partisan Selangor coordinator working with Putrajaya to ramp up vaccination efforts in the state as part of Operation Surge Capacity (OSC).
He said Putrajaya's announcement of the OSC had led to 500,000 people registering to get vaccinated via MySejahtera in the Klang Valley. - Mkini
