NGO renews call for Coroner Court Act to probe custodial deaths

Rights group Eliminating Deaths and Abuse In Custody Together (Edict) has renewed its call for the government to formulate the Coroner Court Act, a standalone law that deals with custodial deaths.

In a statement today, Edict said this would ensure smoother and more efficient inquest proceedings into custodial deaths.

Edict was also concerned with two recent custodial deaths which happened within two weeks of each other and urged the government to hold an inquest into these cases.

“The first case involved a 27-year-old man at the Kuala Selangor district police headquarters while the second death involved a 25-year-old man at the Kajang prison on June 21.

“Edict is very concerned with the development as custodial deaths are still happening frequently despite receiving heavy criticism from the public,” said Edict.

In both cases, the suspects were charged and nabbed for murder.

Roopan Karnagaran, a detainee at the Kajang Prison reportedly died on June 21, eight days before the court was supposed to hear his appeal over a murder charge.

The second case involved a 27-year-old who allegedly hacked his year-old niece on her head during a row among family members, but had been injured during the incident in Jeram.

He died on July 4 while receiving treatment at the Tanjung Karang Hospital.

Edict called for the government to expedite its measures in resolving custodial deaths.  - Mkini
