Parliament must debate ‘ineffective’ stimulus packages, says Guan Eng

Lim Guan Eng says the emergency ordinances, the national recovery plan and the budget expenditures must top the agenda when Parliament reconvenes.

PETALING JAYA: The ineffectiveness of the government’s RM530 billion aid packages must be debated when Parliament reconvenes on July 26, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said.

He said the finance ministry’s proposal to revise its annual growth forecast from 7.5% to around 4%, and its projection that the fiscal deficit may rise to as high as 7.5% over its prediction of 5.4% when the national budget was announced, proved that the stimulus packages had not had their intended effect of spurring the economy.

“Is the failure of the RM530 billion in financial aid packages due to deviations in implementation, the failure to impose an interest-free bank loan moratorium or the lack of boldness in allocating direct fund injection of a mere RM83 billion?” he asked in a statement.

“The coming parliamentary meeting on July 26 must see a full debate on the emergency ordinances, the national recovery plan and the budget expenditures as commanded by the King,” he said, as stimulus packages are part of the recovery plan and were included in the federal budget.

Lim also noted the recent gaffes by senior government officials, with a number of ministers making the headlines yesterday.

“Competency is also an issue when we see the health minister continue his bumbling performance that has made Malaysia a laughing stock internationally, from suggesting drinking warm water to prevent Covid-19 to now mixing up Spanish flu with the aphrodisiac Spanish fly.

“Such antics are not helped by senior minister Azmin Ali (reportedly visiting) Turkey in such dire times when so many Malaysian lives and livelihoods are lost.

“Ministers continue to blithely breach movement control order restrictions with Annuar Musa fined RM2,000 for breaking his own government’s SOPs, by visiting with his wife the home of former prime minister Tun Abdullah (Ahmad) Badawi,” he said. - FMT
