The lambda variant of Covid-19 has not been detected in Malaysia yet, said Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
"The latest genomic screening showed all 43 samples were of the delta variant as the dominant variant of concern.
"So far no lambda variant has been detected in our country," he said in a tweet.
He was responding to a query on whether the lambda variant had reached Malaysia,
The lambda variant is highly infectious and more resistant to vaccines, according to studies.
Reuters highlighted a study that found that three mutations in Lambda's spike protein made it more resistant to neutralisation from vaccines.
However, it is not yet clear which vaccines are more or less vulnerable to the variant.
At present, the closest the lambda variant is to Malaysia is the Phillipines.
It is currently classified as a variant of interest by the World Health Organisation rather than a variant of concern. - Mkini
