The cabinet will continue its appeal over the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s recent declaration of automatic citizenship for overseas-born children of Malaysian mums and foreign dads.
Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin, who revealed this at a press conference today, reiterated that this was meant to avoid contempt of court while also abiding by the Federal Constitution.
He had previously said that the government wanted to buy time as there were two different rulings on the same issue by the High Court, with one favouring the government.
He had also said that the government was reviewing the possibility of amending the Federal Constitution to make it easier for Malaysian mothers married to foreigners to give birth overseas.
However, such a constitutional amendment would require consent from the Conference of Rulers.
Hamzah said Attorney-General Idrus Harun has been instructed to meet with the deputy Yang-di Pertuan Agong, to discuss the matter as soon as possible.
The deputy king is currently acting as the head of state while the Agong is overseas.
DAP's Ramkarpal Singh had previously pointed out that the court ruling on citizenship was not binding, and that a constitutional amendment was needed. - Mkini
