PETALING JAYA: The Kuala Lumpur Air Traffic Control Centre (KLATCC) has been relocated to Sepang from Subang, in what the transport ministry has billed a “historic moment” for the country’s aviation industry.
In a statement, minister Wee Ka Siong said the shift was in line with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia’s (CAAM) efforts to standardise and incorporate International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards in the Kuala Lumpur Flight Information Region (KL FIR) airspace design.
He said the new KL FIR airspace would allow more aircraft to land during peak hours or premium slots, increasing the landing capacity at KLIA from 78 aircrafts per hour to 108, which will be among the highest in the world.
The redesign of the airspace, he added, would subsequently allow more aircraft movements per hour by fully utilising the three runways at KLIA simultaneously.
Wee also said the new airspace structure would provide more efficient and seamless air traffic management.
“It will also enhance Malaysia’s competitiveness in the aviation industry by raising the availability and connectivity of the country’s civil aviation industry.”
The new airspace structure, Wee said, was equipped with new airways, new departure and arrival standards alongside a new backend system.
“These improvements are aimed at providing lucrative returns to the country via the expansion of the aviation industry.” - FMT
