Let e-sports star join top Dota 2 tourney, urges Muda

Putrajaya has been urged to grant e-sports star Cheng Jin Xiang permission to leave the country for a major tournament in Romania on Oct 7.

In a statement today, Muda treasurer Tarmizi Anuwar said Cheng's manager has been trying to obtain permission for him to leave since Aug 1 to no avail.

"I hope the Youth and Sports Ministry will assist and expedite (Cheng's) application," said Tarmizi.

Cheng, 20, is a professional Dota 2 player and a member of the e-sports organisation PSG.LGD, which has been invited to participate in The International 10 (TI10) tournament.

TI10 is the world's richest e-sport event with a prize pool of US$40,018,195 (RM166 million) or approximately 10 times more than the purse for Tour de France 2021 or a bit higher than what Manchester United recently paid for Christiano Ronaldo.

Cheng, better known in the e-sports circle as NothingToSay, is ranked number two on Dota 2's Southeast Asia individual leaderboard while PSG.LDG (co-owned by the Paris Saint-Germain football club) is the world number two ranked team, according to Dota Pro Circuit 2021.

Tarmizi said Cheng was not only important to PSG.LGD, but he was also an important player in the Dota 2 community the world over.

"It would be a waste if Cheng could not compete in TI10 just because of a technical issue," said Tarmizi.

Dota 2 is among the world's most widely played computer game and will be featured as a medal event in the Asian Games 2022 in China.

Malaysia has produced one champion at The International (Wong Hock Chuan, 2012), one runner-up (Yap Jian Wei, 2018) and six second runner-ups. - Mkini
