KOTA BARU: A drug addict and his friend were detained after they threw an explosive substance at a police beat base in Jelawat near Bachok yesterday.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said the 37-year-old drug addict and his 24-year-old friend were detained by the police separately last night and this morning.

"Based on image captured on a CCTV installed near the area, some parts of the beat base caught fire after a motorcyclist threw an object towards it around 3.15am yesterday.

"Following the incident, police mounted an operation to track down the suspect and later arrested the two separately in the same district," he said today.

Shafien told this to reporters after witnessing the handing over ceremony of the state deputy police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Mohammad Piah.

Abdullah who retired today, was replaced by Bukit Aman Management Department Career Development Division (Human Resource Policy) principal assistant director Deputy Commissioner Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun.

Shafien said police were still investigating the motive behind the incident.

"The two suspects, both with previous records, have been remanded for seven days to assist police investigations into the case," he added.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or any explosive substance, intending to cause damage to any property. - NST
