Wan Saiful: Bersatu consistent on integrity, wants deputy speaker post discussed

Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan today hinted that Ahmad Maslan’s criminal trial was the reason why Bersatu MPs are not supporting the Umno leader to be a Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker.

In a Facebook post this afternoon, Wan Saiful said their principle is “consistent” when it comes to the issue of “integrity and court cases”.

He stressed that while Bersatu can accept a candidate from another party to fill the post, the matter still needs to be discussed.

“We can agree with the proposal to put a candidate from another party, but who the candidate is must be negotiated first, because Bersatu has strong principles that are not to be compromised.

“When it comes to such a major issue, the right thing to do within a multi-parties coalition like what we have today is to take the view of each member,” he said.

Wan Saiful’s post came attached with a screenshot of a Malaysiakini story where Ahmad was quoted speaking about Bersatu abstaining from a plan to vote him to be a Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker.

“Please ask Bersatu. Thank you,” the Umno information chief said when asked for his reaction.

Ahmad Maslan

For the record, Ahmad is presently standing trial for money laundering and giving a false statement to the MACC over RM2 million he received from then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak in 2013.

Najib was in July last year sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving RM42 million of funds belonging to state-owned SRC International Sdn Bhd. He is appealing the decision.

Dewan Rakyat has two deputy speaker posts, one of which is now vacant following the resignation of Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said last month.

The Umno-led government has then nominated Ahmad as their sole candidate for the post, and it was scheduled to go for a voting process during Dewan Rakyat sitting last Tuesday.

However, the voting process was postponed as Bersatu MPs reportedly have refused to back Ahmad. - Mkini
