Ministry says DBKL to coordinate groups helping homeless in KL

PARLIAMENT | The Federal Territories Ministry has welcomed contributions from NGOs involved in providing assistance to the homeless around Kuala Lumpur, ahead of the upcoming Ramadhan month.

Deputy Federal Territories Minister Jalaluddin Alias, however, requested that all groups, particularly those from out of state, to liaise with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and coordinate their efforts.

"On behalf of the ministry, I would like to thank all groups involved in helping the homeless in KL.

"We have no objections against any party that wishes to donate to the homeless. However, we hope that the NGOs will contact DBKL so we can coordinate the efforts," said the Jempol MP.

"This is important so there will be no major wastage," he added in response to a supplementary question from Steven Choong (PBM-Tebrau).

Jalaluddin earlier revealed that data obtained from the ministry's transit centres for the homeless showed around 20 percent of those rescued had returned to the streets.

Choong then asked whether donations from NGOs had contributed to the homeless leaving the ministry's transit facilities where they are given various skill training and job opportunities.

Jalaluddin also said the ministry had last year rescued up to 900 individuals from the streets, based on admission records at three transit centres. - Mkini
