Sri Aman MP quits PSB, declares support for PM

Sri Aman MP Masir Kujat has quit Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) with immediate effect and declared support for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s administration.

In a statement today, Masir (above) said he will remain as an independent lawmaker given that the parliamentary term will end in a year.

With this decision, he hopes that the government will channel equal allocation to him as what the government lawmakers receive.

“I left Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), which is a component party of the ruling coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), and joined PSB in 2019. Since then, I had a very limited source of funds to cater for the development of my constituency.

“So, I hope with my independent status and support of the BN government led by Ismail Sabri, I will get some allocation for the next one year to service my area, perhaps RM1 million to RM2 million,” he told Malaysiakini

Seeking political stability

Masir believes the best way forward is to put politics aside to stabilise and rebuild the nation.

“The decision was made after discussions with grassroots supporters in my constituency and because of the political instability in the country, which clearly affects the national economy and development. These are among the reasons (I resigned),” he said.

Malaysiakini has attempted to contact PSB president Wong Soon Koh for comment.

With Masir's exit, PSB is left with only one lawmaker, Selangau MP Baru Bian.

Ismail Sabri’s administration commands the support of 115 MPs.

Previously during the Sheraton Move, Masir had at first declared support for Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.

However, PSB then instructed him to toe the party line and back Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and later to remain as part of the opposition. - Mkini
