UiTM to take action against 'anti-B40' lecturer

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) will be taking action against a lecturer who berated a student for not being able to afford a laptop, in a viral video circulating on social media.

The video is believed to have been taken during an online class in the previous semester.

UiTM vice-chancellor Roziah Mohd Janor said that the university is investigating the contract lecturer in question and disciplinary action will be taken against her.

“She is a contract lecturer at the UiTM Seri Iskandar, Perak campus and teaches at the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying (FSPU).

"I understand that the incident happened last semester, however, it was only circulated last night. There must be a plan behind this issue and why it was only uploaded yesterday.

"However, action will be taken and as for the student (in the video), we have identified (him) and provided the necessary equipment (laptop)," Roziah added.

The vice-chancellor said this after the One to One Tree programme launch and a memorandum of understanding signing ceremony between Yayasan Hijau Malaysia and UiTM.

Roziah added that the investigated individual was a good lecturer and there might have been a mistake in her admonition of the student.

"Action will be taken, but I can't explain it here. She is a contract lecturer and there is a process before action is taken.

"All UiTM lecturers want the best for their students and I hope the public can be considerate of my staff and students," she said.

UiTM is expected to release a press statement on the matter soon.

This follows Higher Education Minister Noraini Ahmad’s remarks earlier that she was in communication with the university over the viral video involving the professor.

‘This is why I can’t sit with the B40’

The clip which lasted one minute and 45 seconds showed the lecturer scolding one of her students for attending their online class via a mobile phone instead of a laptop.

The professor told the student that his lack of proper equipment to attend the class, despite being in his fifth semester, would hinder his studies and he would end up as a dropout.

“The price of a computer is only RM800, what's your problem?”

“That’s why I can’t sit with B40 people, these people only think more about other things than education,” she remarked in the video.

Earlier in the clip, the lecturer was heard telling the Seremban-based student to tell his sibling to sell her gold bracelets and buy a laptop, after he had informed the former that his father was unemployed and his mother had passed away.

The account that published the clip has since been deleted.
