GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government acknowledged that erosion had worsened at the Golden Sands Resort public beach.

Speaking to the New Straits Times, state Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the state had already approved allocation to do some mitigation works at the public beach around the area.

"It has worsened in the same stretch (Golden Sands public beach). That is true. We are waiting for materials to arrive and expect the contractor to begin (mitigation) work at the end of this month," he said when contacted.

The NST reported yesterday that the Batu Ferringhi beach was at risk of erosion.

Locals and visitors to the famed Batu Ferringhi beach had expressed concern that the beach might disappear due to aggressive erosion.

They said the erosion had worsened. The width of the erosion, which initially measured 20m, had widened to a 5km stretch along the shores.

They had urged the authorities to address the problem immediately.

Elaborating, Zairil said for the Rasa Sayang portion, the hotel management itself would also be undertaking the mitigation works as it was part of their area and responsibility.

"As for the Golden Sands public beach, we (the state government) will repair.

"As for the other parts of the Batu Ferringhi beach, they are not affected. It (the erosion) is mainly now at the Rasa Sayang and Golden Sands stretches," he added.

He said near the Hard Rock Hotel Penang, an outfall structure was built by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage few years back to mitigate any erosion. - NST
