JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor has increased to 4,868 people from 1,331 families as of 8am this morning, compared to 4,842 victims from 1,318 families recorded last night.
Johor state government secretary Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said two additional temporary evacuation centres (PPS) have been opened, making it a total of 50 PPS in operation.
He said Mersing is currently the worst affected district with 1,793 victims from 512 families placed in 11 PPS, this morning.
Azmi, who is also the State Disaster Management Committee chairman said Tangkak is the latest and eighth district to be struck by floods in the state with 15 victims from three families evacuated to Balairaya Kampung Durian Chondong PPS, in Kampung Pengkalan Kota, early this morning.
"Kluang was the second most flood-affected district with 1,173 victims from 321 families taking shelter in seven PPS this morning followed by Kota Tinggi with 900 victims from 224 families in 11 PPS.
"Segamat showed a downward trend with 490 flood victims from 138 families taking shelter in 11 PPS this morning, followed by Batu Pahat with 358 residents from 100 families in six PPS.
"Muar recorded a total of 121 flood victims from 29 families who took shelter in two PPS, while Pontian remained with 18 victims from four families who are taking shelter in PPS Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Melayu Raya," he said in a statement.
In the meantime, Azmi asked people of the state to remain cautious following the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) warning of continuous rain at an alert level in six districts of the state.
He said six districts forecast to experience continuous rain and placed at the warning level are Mersing, Kluang, Segamat, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru.
Azmi said a total of five main roads in the state were also closed to all types of vehicles, two in Mersing and Segamat and one in Kulai.
He said the two roads that were closed in Mersing is Jalan Nitar Timur-Pengkalan Batu (FT1425) which was flooded and Jalan Tanah Abang (J228) which was submerged by 0.5 metres of flood waters.
"The two roads that are closed in Segamat are Jalan Felda Medoi (FT1384) due to 0.95 metres deep flood water while Jabi-Bukit Tempurung Road (J156) is flooded with 0.81 meters deep flood water.
"The Sungai Tiram-Ulu Tiram road (J08) in Kulai is still closed due to a 12-meter-high landslide there, making it unsafe to use," he said.
Meanwhile, Azmi said, the four main rivers in the state continue to remain at a dangerous level involving two in Segamat and one each in Kluang and Mersing.
"Sungai Muar in Segamat recorded a danger level of 19.08 meters this morning, as well as Sungai Batu Pahat in Ladang Chaah, Segamat, also stood at a danger level of 6.43 meters.
"Sungai Endau in Kampung Contoh, Kluang stood at the dangerous level of 15.42 metres this morning while Sungai Endau in Mersing also recorded a dangerous level of 2.83 metres." he said. - NST
