PSI project: Fisherfolk insist on meeting PM before accepting compensation

A group of fisherfolk who have been opposing the Penang South Island (PSI) reclamation project, have refused to accept any compensation offers from the state government.

Penang Fishermen’s Association chairperson Ibrahim Che Ros insisted that they must meet with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim first before accepting any deals.

"I wish to stress that we stand by our decision not to accept any offers from the Penang government as long as we have not met Anwar," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

Ibrahim said they had already written a letter to the premier, but had not had a meeting date sent.

They understand, however, that Anwar has a packed calendar but they would wait nonetheless.

It should be noted that the PSI project is currently stalled after approval for its first environmental impact assessment (EIA) was revoked in 2021.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim

Formerly known as the Penang South Reclamation (PSR), the PSI is a state government project involving the reclamation of three islands to build industrial zones, tourist attractions, education hubs and housing projects, including affordable housing.

The artificial islands will span 1,821ha, equivalent to the size of 2,550 football fields.

The state government has promised that the project will be developed sustainably, touting its ability to create jobs and spur the economy.

However, local fisherfolk are staunchly against the project citing concerns about its impact on both the environment and their livelihoods.

In 2021, they launched a successful appeal with the Department of Environment (DOE) to revoke the EIA, and the decision was upheld by the High Court in August last year.

The Penang government, however, has submitted a new EIA for the DOE's approval.

One of those who are in support of the fisherfolk and want the PSI project canned is Anwar's daughter, former Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah. - Mkini
