KUALA LUMPUR: The immigration department arrested 17 people in an online gambling raid at premises in Jalan Kerinchi, Bangsar, here yesterday, director-general Ruslin Jusoh said.

He added that the arrests comprised 14 Chinese men and three local men, in their 20s and 30s.

Ruslin said the 11pm operation was carried out based on tip-offs from the public and intelligence gathered over the previous month.

He said that the immigration officers had to break down the entrance to the premises after the occupants refused to co-operate.

“We found 14 Chinese nationals running online gambling activities, targeting customers from Brazil,” he said in a press conference here.

Ruslin said that none of the Chinese suspects could produce valid identification and travel documents, which were believed to be still held by the people running the operation.

Meanwhile, the three local men, believed to be caretakers of the premises, were arrested to assist in the investigation.

He said that the team also seized 16 laptops, 10 monitors, 45 mobile phones and two tablets, with one of the tablets believed to be used as a closed-circuit camera decoder. They also seized some ICT equipment and utility bills for the premises.

“All the foreign nationals were arrested on suspicion of committing an offence under the Immigration Act 1959/63, the Passport Act 1966 and the Immigration Regulations 1963, and were taken to the Kuala Lumpur immigration department for further action,” he said. - FMT
