Tengku Fa-iz stripped of Tengku Mahkota Kelantan title

The Kelantan palace has revoked the title of Tengku Mahkota Kelantan bestowed on Tengku Muhammad Fa-iz Petra, and awarded it to Tengku Bendahara Kelantan Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra.

This was stated in a Kelantan government gazette dated Jan 11, confirmed by state secretary Nazran Muhammad to the New Straits Times yesterday.

According to the gazette, the decision was made at a meeting at the state secretary’s office in the Kota Darulnaim complex on Jan 4 involving members of the Kelantan Royal Council.

The decisions were also based on state ruler Sultan Muhammad V’s authority under Clause (2) Article 27 of the Kelantan Government Constitution (Part Two), read together with Section 47 of the Interpretation Acts 1948 and 1967, added the gazette.

No reason was given for the revocation and appointment for the Tengku Mahkota post.

Malaysiakini has reached out to the Kelantan palace as well as the state government for a reply.

Tengku Fa-iz, the second son of the late Sultan Ismail Petra, held the Tengku Mahkota post for about 13 years from Oct 18, 2010.

The Kelantan Royal Council is a body that confirms the ascension to the throne and the government of Kelantan.

It consists of 20 members, including the state secretary, the mufti, four members of the royal family, and six to 12 members who are Malays and locals of the state.

Controversies

Tengku Fakhry, the third child of Sultan Ismail, came under the media spotlight in 2010 when his Temenggong title was revoked by his brother Sultan Muhammad V.

Tengku Fakhry was involved in a court case when he filed a civil suit against the then-inspector-general of police Ismail Omar, alleging that police had wrongfully detained him when he was driving a Bentley Brooklands in the compound of the Istana Mahkota Kubang Kerian, Kota Bharu in 2009.

Previously, the prince was also involved in a domestic controversy when his ex-wife Manohara Odelia Pinot and her mother Daisy Fajarina accused Tengku Fakhry of abusing Manohara, who holds dual citizenship in Indonesia and the US.

The case was later brought to the Kuala Lumpur High Court, where Manohara and Daisy were ordered to pay Tengku Fakhry a compensation of RM6 million. - Mkini
