Former Court of Appeal judge named new Suhakam chair

Former Court of Appeal judge Mohd Hishamudin Md Yunus has been appointed as the new Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) chairperson for a three-year term effective July 3.

His appointment was announced by Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali in a statement today.

“In accordance with subsection 5(2) under the Suhakam Act 1999, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to the appointment of Mohd Hishamudin Md Yunus as Suhakam chairperson for a period of three years,” said Zuki.

Hishamudin, 74, replaces Suhakam’s previous chair Rahmat Mohamad who voluntarily resigned effective Aug 31, leaving the position vacant for 10 months.

The long vacancy became a focus during debates on Suhakam’s annual report in the Dewan Rakyat recently.

Hishamudin began his career in the Malaysian judicial and legal service in August 1973 as a magistrate in Kuala Lumpur and was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the Malaysian Bar in 1984.

He became a High Court judge in 1994 and was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2009, where he remained until his retirement in September 2015.

He was appointed as a Suhakam member on April 27, 2019. - Mkini
