Subang Jaya rep seeks senior constituents as 'interns'

Internships are usually designed for novices to get their first taste of work, however, Michelle Ng is switching things up and offering a programme for those in their golden years instead.

Those aged 60 and above have the opportunity to participate in the Senior Internship Programme with the Subang Jaya assemblyperson’s office, set to begin next January.

“This internship is a way to utilise the experience and knowledge that senior citizens possess.

“In this programme, they will be exposed to the work of an assembly member, including service centre tasks and lawmaking.

“As a state, Selangor, and as a nation, we are heading toward an ageing society. This has gained attention at every level of government - federal, state, and local. In such a situation, we, as policymakers, must re-evaluate our policies in all aspects,” she told Malaysiakini.

Valuable seniors

Ng said the programme would leverage the knowledge and experience of retirees as they still have a lot to offer.

“With advancements in medical technology, even though they are over 60, they are still energetic and can contribute to society. However, due to company policies, they had to retire,” she said.

Ng also hopes to learn from these experienced seniors.

“I look forward to their suggestions, changes, or improvements, or any advice they wish to provide, so we can jointly build the Subang Jaya community,” she said.

Additionally, Ng noted that many senior citizens experience loneliness when their children leave the nest.

“Therefore, this job is one way to help them overcome feelings of isolation.

“It’s a two-way benefit. On one hand, we utilise their knowledge and experience, and on the other, we provide them with a platform to continue contributing while also preventing them from feeling lonely at home,” she added.

Don’t miss out on golden opportunity

The programme will offer pay of RM35 per day with a minimum working period of five days in the office. Chosen candidates will get a one-week adjustment period, and suitable senior citizens can continue the internship for three months.

“We have no restrictions - Malay, Chinese, Indian, Kadazan, Dusun - anyone who has not yet applied can do so. There’s no problem,” she said.

So far, responses from her senior constituents have been encouraging based on the number of applications received, Ng shared, and the DAP lawmaker assured that her office would provide opportunities to as many participants as possible.

In expressing her excitement about starting this type of internship, she encouraged those eligible not to miss this golden opportunity.

“I hope they will join me because no one has ever initiated a programme like this.

“I hope they are willing to work with my office and the government so we can together contribute and bring benefits back to the community,” she added. - Mkini
