PETALING JAYA
The foreign ministry has confirmed that no Malaysians were on board the Jeju Air plane that crashed in South Korea today, claiming at least 120 lives.

“The Malaysian embassy in Seoul has confirmed that no Malaysians were on board the aircraft,” it said in a statement today.

Earlier, Wisma Putra said the Malaysian embassy in Seoul was actively gathering information from official sources to ascertain if any Malaysians were on board.

It also urged Malaysians in South Korea who require consular assistance or further information to contact the embassy office in Seoul.

“Malaysia extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to the victims and families affected by the incident, as well as to the people and government of South Korea,” the statement added.

Jeju Air flight 7C2216 veered off the runway and slammed into a wall at South Korea’s Muan International Airport at 8.07am Malaysian time, Yonhap news agency reported.

The accident occurred moments after the flight from Bangkok, carrying 175 passengers and six crew members, landed at the airport some 300km southwest of Seoul.

Videos showed the plane attempting to land without its landing gear deployed, causing the plane to skid along the ground before crashing into a concrete wall and bursting into flames.

Authorities had earlier confirmed that so far, only two women – a passenger and flight attendant – were rescued from the burning aircraft and had been taken to hospital.

Yonhap also reported firefighting authorities as saying that, aside from the two survivors, everyone else on board was presumed to have been killed in the accident. - FMT
