PETALING JAYA: For the past two months, going home and leaving the house has been a hellish experience for over 1,000 households in a Taman Medan apartment block, as only three lifts in the building are operational.
The situation has residents forming a beeline to enter a lift, with waiting times stretching over 30 minutes.
The building has six lifts, but three are out of commission after being vandalised.
To make matters worse, the apartment's joint management body (JMB) does not have enough funds to repair the lifts.
One resident, Nurul Azila, 45, said the wait for a lift was worse during peak hours when residents were going to work or returning home.
"I've lived here for 10 years, and the lifts are always problematic, but it has never been this bad. This has been the worst year so far.
"If I am queuing and need to use the toilet, I get back in the car, drive around, and look for one rather than waiting for a lift."
Nurul, who lives on the 9th floor, said she pitied children, the elderly, and those who were sick, as they had to wait such a long time for a lift.
Checks at the apartment at 6.30pm found residents queuing to take a lift. Some, unable to wait any longer, took the stairs.
Another resident, Mohd Zulkarnain Hassan, 41, said the vandals had yet to be caught.
The JMB has lodged a police report, but a RM500 reward for information on the culprits has not yielded results.
"The situation is stressing out the residents. Imagine if there is an emergency, it will be difficult," he said.
He added that even the three lifts which were working were prone to breaking down.
"Every day, there are complaints of people being trapped in the lift," he said. - NST
