Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim - in his capacity as the chairperson of Asean next year - has appointed former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as his "informal" personal adviser.
In a joint press conference with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra - Thaksin's daughter - Anwar said Thaksin (above) will be working alongside other leaders from the region.
"I have agreed to appoint (Thaksin) as my personal adviser as chairperson of Asean, with a team of members from Asean countries.
"(It is) an informal setup. Thank you (Paetongtarn) for agreeing to this. We need the benefit of the experience of such statesmen," he said in Putrajaya today.
Thaksin, who was prime minister from 2001 to 2006, had been living in exile after being ousted in a military coup.
He returned to Thailand last year ahead of the election which the military was expected to lose.
Upon his return in August, the former business mogul was arrested and jailed for abuse of power.
The Thai king reduced his eight-year sentence to just one, and he was released on parole in February. - Mkini
