PETALING JAYA: Celebrity preacher Azman Syah Alias has been sentenced to seven years in jail and two strokes of the cane for sexually assaulting two teenage boys two years ago.
Azman, 43, pleaded guilty to four amended charges at the Seremban sessions court today, Harian Metro reported.
According to the charge sheet, the offences were committed against two male victims, aged 16 and 17, at a house in Nilai, between 8.30pm and 5am, on Feb 5 and July 6, 2022.
The charges were brought under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and caning upon conviction.
Judge Surita Budin ordered Azman to undergo two years of rehabilitation counselling and two years of police supervision after completing his sentence.
His lawyer, Zahid Ahmad, said his client’s confession saved time for all those who were involved, so there was no need to continue the trial.
“My client requests the lightest possible sentence from the date he was granted bail, which was on Oct 9,” he was quoted as saying.
“He has been in prison since Sept 27 and is still serving his sentence for the charges in the Klang court.”
Deputy public prosecutor Rasyidah Murni said Azman’s guilty plea should not reduce his sentence and called for a punishment that serves as a lesson for both him and society.
“The accused is a celebrity preacher, and such actions should not have been committed by a religious figure like him, especially against children.
“The prosecution views this offence as a serious matter and it should not be taken lightly when imposing a sentence on the accused,” she said.
On Dec 6, the Klang magistrates’ court sentenced Azman to 14 months in jail for outraging the decency of a teenage boy two years ago.
In September, Azman was sentenced to 24 years in prison and two strokes of the rotan for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old boy on two occasions in 2022. - FMT
