The Malaysian Stray Animal Association (SAFM) has dismissed the claim that stray dogs caused the recent deaths of cats at Universiti Malaya (UM).
The group alleged that the cats’ injuries were more consistent with the use of sharp objects, suggesting possible human involvement.
“We reject baseless accusations against stray dogs without solid evidence. Such claims are not only unfair but also contribute to negative stigma against stray animals,” SAFM said in a statement today.
It was reported two days ago that police investigations based on CCTV footage found that the cat deaths were due to dog attacks.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa said the Veterinary Services Department (DVS) confirmed the cats died from injuries from such an attack.
“The police have received three reports regarding the cat deaths at the university on Tuesday, Friday, and yesterday. However, no eyewitnesses were present during the incidents,” Rusdi said in a statement.
CCTV footage from the affected areas revealed the presence of stray dogs attacking the cats, shedding light on the tragic events.
Conduct DNA analysis
However, SAFM called for a thorough forensic investigation to identify the perpetrators.
This includes DNA analysis and examination of sharp objects that could have been used in the incident.
The NGO emphasised that cruelty to animals is a serious crime requiring firm action and pledged to continue monitoring the case to ensure justice for the animals.
