About 10k unconfirmed attendance for SPM 2024 raises concerns among netizens

THE perception among students that the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)  exam is not “important” has sparked concern on social media.

Some argued that successful entrepreneurs have achieved financial success without formal qualifications, but such cases are rare exceptions rather than the norm. Despite this, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek reported a 97% attendance rate for the SPM 2024 candidates.

However, around 10,000 candidates have yet to confirm their participation.

The Education Ministry has implemented measures to address potential floods with “Ops Payung” and assigned 5,780 volunteer exam personnel. A total of 402,956 candidates are registered for the exam.

On X, netizens are saying that the students who aren’t willing to sit for the exam would have themselves to blame, as neither their parents, teachers or even the government can physically force them to take the exams.

Some also place blame on parents if their children fail to attend the exam. A user on X pointed out that some parents rely entirely on teachers to handle their children’s challenges, which places an unfair burden on educators.

Some users are saying that teenagers confident enough to be influencers would need to wake up to reality. Not all influencers are financially successful, and it takes a lot for someone to get recognition and become popular throughout the country.

Students taking the exams have been sharing their thoughts on each paper through X. This trend has been common since social media became popular over a decade ago.

One student said they were successful in their SPM, doing well with the k3 and k4, for example.
