The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded the statement of PAS assemblyperson Mohd Zamri Mohd Zainuldin over a false social media posting related to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The commission said the Sungai Burong assemblyperson’s statement was recorded after receiving complaints from the public about a social media account on the Facebook platform that was found to have disseminated a false post about the prime minister.
"The investigation revealed that most of the accounts involved are fake accounts. However, MCMC identified one of the reported accounts as belonging to Zamri (above).
"As a result, MCMC recorded Zamri’s statement on Jan 7 to assist the police’s investigation,” it said.
According to MCMC, a smartphone and a SIM card were handed over as case evidence to assist in the investigation.
It stated that forensic analysis would be conducted on the device for further investigation.
"The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000 or one-year imprisonment, or both," it added.
It is believed that the post is related to Sarawak PKR leader Iswardy Morni's conviction under the Sedition Act for insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
MCMC urged the public to exercise caution when uploading any posts on social media and to ensure that the information disseminated is accurate and verified.
It stated that this measure is to ensure an online environment of integrity and safety for the public’s well-being. - Mkini
