PETALING JAYA: The tourism, arts and culture ministry will gazette a certain area in Sarawak as a “special tourism investment zone” sometime this year.
The federal ministry’s secretary-general Roslan Abdul Rahman said the area had already been identified but declined to share details on the location and initiative.
“While we cannot disclose specific details yet, we have a step-by-step plan to transform this area into a prime tourism investment zone.
“We hope this will attract more investors to Sarawak,” he was quoted as saying by Dayak Daily.
Roslan was optimistic that Sarawak would garner greater attention worldwide, particularly with Kuching getting a new international airport.
He said the tourism growth would benefit both the state and Malaysia.
Roslan said Sarawak’s abundant natural beauty was unique to the state, ranging from mountains to forests, lakes, rivers and beaches.
Sarawak is using its own funds to develop a new international airport in Kuching, aimed at establishing the Bornean state as a modern aviation hub.
State premier Abang Johari Openg had said Sarawak would draw inspiration from the airports in Abu Dhabi and Doha, featuring a seamless concept and cutting-edge technology. - FMT
