MCA Kelantan would like to suggest to the Kelantan state government to consider providing retail shops with the discretion to decide whether to operate during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday period.
It is important to acknowledge that while the first day of Aidilfitri is a significant celebration for many, certain businesses may face challenges if required to close entirely.
Flexibility can help support both businesses and the economy, while still respecting the religious significance of the holiday.
For businesses that choose to open, we recommend that workers who opt to take leave during this period should be granted the time off, in line with their rights under the Employment Act.
On the other hand, employees who are required to work should be compensated fairly with the appropriate rates, including overtime pay where applicable.
Moreover, given the influx of Kelantan folks who will “balik kampung”, keeping shops open means higher business opportunities with more income generated. Forcefully shutting shops will also discourage would-be investors from investing.
Additionally, essential services, such as private clinics, petrol stations, and retail shops especially those located at key locations like the Kota Bharu Sultan Ismail Petra Airport and bus hubs, should remain open.
These services are crucial for the convenience of both Kelantan residents returning home for the holidays and tourists who may need access to essential supplies or services.
The closure of all businesses may result in undue inconvenience, especially when it comes to obtaining basic ingredients or emergency supplies.
We urge the Kelantan state government to adopt a balanced and flexible approach, taking into consideration the needs of both businesses and residents during this important holiday season.
