Facebook user apologises for insulting Islam

 

A man who claims his name is Vijayan Savarinathan said he was angry about a video featuring radio station presenters who mocked the Thaipusam kavadi ritual.

A man who allegedly insulted Islam in a now-viral video has issued a public apology.

In a video posted on Facebook today, the man, who claimed his name is Vijayan Savarinathan, acknowledged that he made a mistake.

He said his actions were driven by anger stemming from a video featuring radio station presenters who mocked the Thaipusam kavadi ritual.

“I sincerely apologise from the bottom of my heart. What I did and said was completely inappropriate,” he said in the video posted on the “Vijayan Savarinathan” Facebook account.

“I was angry and couldn’t hold back because we (Hindus) were insulted, but that is no excuse for me to make such a video.”

Last week, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said police were identifying the individual behind the “Vijayan Savarinathan” Facebook account, believed to be overseas.

He said the authorities were investigating the case as a criminal offence of inciting racial and religious disharmony.

Razarudin said the video may be in response to an earlier video featuring three DJs who courted controversy for mocking the kavadi ritual.

Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin, meanwhile, has called on the government to revoke the man’s citizenship.

A former home minister, Hamzah said revoking the man’s citizenship would help deter other Malaysians living abroad from making such remarks. - FMT
