
He said the products would be purchased by these influencers and entrepreneurs without paying taxes or obtaining approval from the health ministry and the customs department, Bernama reported.
Razarudin said that while this is not a new issue, it has become more pressing, with the General Operations Force (GOF) making large-scale seizures of illegally imported beauty and health products.
“These social media influencers and cosmetic sellers are taking advantage of cheap, tax-free stock from Thailand and reselling it in Malaysia at several times the original price.
“Apart from causing tax revenue losses for the country, the bigger concern is the risk posed to consumers, as these products have not undergone inspections or received approval from the health ministry,” he said.
He revealed that smugglers often use illicit border routes or enlist individuals to transport small quantities of products to evade strict inspections at the Malaysia-Thailand border.
He also said that authorities suspect a network of suppliers is involved in smuggling these beauty products from Thailand before they are marketed online or promoted by popular influencers.
“Enforcement agencies are now tightening border surveillance and will take action against individuals selling unregistered cosmetic products in the local market,” he added.
He also noted that in Kelantan, the GOF has made various seizures, including smuggled cosmetic products, agricultural goods such as coconuts, and other plants from neighbouring countries. - FMT
