Loke said a major change was needed to prepare DAP for future challenges so that it can remain competitive in the nation’s political landscape, Sin Chew reported.
“However, this depends on whether I’m returned as the secretary-general as well as the composition of the new central executive committee,” he was quoted as saying.
Loke, who is in his first term as DAP secretary-general, said the planned reshuffle was not targeted at any specific position but was aimed at adjusting the roles different leaders play.
Despite holding the largest number of seats among the parties in the unity government, he said, DAP could not afford to be complacent and further reforms were needed to face future general elections.
DAP is also the second largest party in Parliament with 40 seats and has more than 100 elected representatives at the federal and state levels.
Loke said he already had a set of criteria in mind to select the best candidates for the relevant posts.
“We must maintain a sense of urgency. This reshuffle is not aimed at sacrificing anyone but to allow different leaders to assume different roles at their respective stages,” he said.
He expressed confidence in being re-elected for a second term as secretary-general, saying he has built close ties with the party’s highest echelon in the past three years.
He believed they would continue to support him. - FMT
