Rais wants China-Taiwan reunification group probed for 'communism'

Former Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim has reportedly lodged a police report against a pro-China reunification group, questioning whether it is spreading communist ideology in Malaysia.

According to PAS' mouthpiece Harakah Daily, Rais held a press conference yesterday, stating that he received a 2 minute 57 second video the night before about an NGO dubbed the ‘Persatuan Promosi Penyatuan Secara Aman Satu China di Malaysia’ (Malaysian Association for Promotion of the Peaceful Reunification of China).

“The video states that this group or organisation is not registered and promotes elements that are prejudicial and complicate internal security.

“If an individual or group of activists promote communist ideology and communist interests in Malaysia, it could affect security and public order,” he was quoted as saying at the press conference.

Rais, who previously held cabinet positions in foreign affairs and communications, claimed that communist ideology is gradually infiltrating Malaysia.

As an example, he alleged that students in a Penang school once sang a foreign patriotic song containing communist elements.

Additionally, he highlighted incidents where individuals raised the Chinese flag in Malaysia and noted that the Malaysian Association for Promotion of the Peaceful Reunification of China actively promotes the "One China" concept in Malaysia.

Possible Hidden Agenda

Rais urged the police to investigate the association and its activities.

“It is understood that the Chinese-language media have long reported on this organisation, yet authorities seem to have taken no action.

“What is worrying is that this unregistered organisation may have a hidden agenda and could even influence some Malaysians to accept communist ideology.

Online searches indicate that the Malaysian Association for Promotion of the Peaceful Reunification of China adheres to the "One China" principle and actively participates in efforts to promote peaceful cross-strait relations between China and Taiwan while opposing third-party interference.

The association is reportedly led by businessperson Koo Yuen Kim.

The video referred to by Rais is a Malay-language summary based on a longer Chinese-language video, both of which are produced by the same online content creator.

In the original video published on March 20, which lasts 11 minutes and 31 seconds, the content creator questioned whether the group is properly registered and whether they were funded by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“I think the Malaysian government should investigate these people, what kind of society is this? They should be investigated to see whether they took money from the CCP. If they are found to have received CCP money, would that be treason?

“A normal Malaysian association wouldn't care whether China and Taiwan would be reunified or Taiwan would be independent. This is a matter between China and Taiwan, what does it have to do with Malaysia?

“I will definitely translate all the news in this video into Malay,” he said.

He also mused about setting up an organisation to promote the “peaceful independence of Taiwan” in Malaysia. - Mkini
