Saravanan to address false claims about Jalan Masjid India temple

MIC deputy president M Saravanan will be addressing allegations against him about the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple in Jalan Masjid India, Kuala Lumpur, tomorrow.

This was amid fierce debate over the temple - which reportedly has a history stretching back 130 years - and plans for it to be relocated to make way for a mosque.

In a statement published on Tamil news site Nambikai, Saravanan said there are currently false allegations that the land was sold when he was the deputy federal territories minister from 2008 to 2013.

“It is being claimed that MIC has made a mistake in this matter.

“Specifically, they have started spreading false information that the land was sold when I was the deputy minister,” he said.

Saravanan said when the temple was threatened in 2006, MIC moved to protect it.

Later, when Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) asked for the temple to be relocated a short distance, it was rebuilt and officiated in 2008 - with support from then MIC president S Samy Vellu.

He said the land on which the temple sits was only sold later.

According to Lawyers for Liberty, which is representing the temple, the land was sold to Jakel Group in 2014.

Jakel wants to build a mosque on the land, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim set to officiate it next week.

The company and DBKL, however, have assured that no work would be carried out until an amicable solution is reached and the temple is relocated. - Mkini
