Will you vacate your house for me, Akmal asks Ambiga

Akmal Saleh questions whether former Malaysian Bar president Ambiga Sreenevasan would be willing to vacate her current residence to make way for him.

This analogy was used by the Umno Youth chief to express his views on the controversy surrounding the relocation of the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur.

Addressing Ambiga and her “lawyer friends”, Akmal said if a mosque is built on someone else’s land, it still needs to be relocated because the land does not belong to the mosque.

With regard to the temple, he said the land owner, Jakel Group, has been “very reasonable” in discussing the matter for a decade to reach a solution.

He said the land owner did not tell the temple to vacate the premises soon after acquiring the parcel of land.

“Moreover, DBKL (Kuala Lumpur City Hall) even proposed an alternative land for relocation, yet you still refuse. And now, suddenly, you are asking the landowner to find another piece of land?

“What kind of lawyers apply such legal logic??

“I want to ask these lawyers - how about you leave your current house because I want to live there? Would that be okay?” he posted on Facebook.

Yesterday, Lawyers for Liberty co-founder N Surendran claimed that the temple, which is slated to be demolished to make way for a mosque, is now in a quandary due to DBKL’s past actions despite the latter appearing to distance itself.

Surendran, who was speaking at a press conference together with Ambiga, said in 2008, DBKL had ordered the temple - which was built in 1893 - to relocate from its original site a few metres away to the plot where it now stands.

Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister R Ramanan stated that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had discussed the issue of the temple’s relocation with him.

He added that the prime minister is seeking a fair and harmonious solution.

Anwar is scheduled to officiate the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a mosque in the area on March 27. - Mkini
