KOTA KINABALU: A Chinese national had to have her leg amputated after she was seriously injured when a restaurant ceiling collapsed while she was dining with her husband.
The incident occurred on March 7 at a Chinese halal restaurant in the Segama commercial area, a busy district in Kota Kinabalu.
Her husband, who requested anonymity, confirmed that doctors were unable to save her left leg.
"She still requires a second surgery as she also suffered spinal injuries," he told The Star, adding that medical teams are considering further treatment options.
The restaurant, run by the couple's son for the past two years, is located on the ground floor of a four-storey building.
The couple had been visiting Sabah on holiday while helping their son with the business.
"We never expected this to happen to us," the husband said, adding that his son had been in talks with the premises owner before the accident.
"As a family, we are deeply grateful for the concern shown by so many people."
Reports indicate that tenants had previously complained about water leaks and falling concrete from the ceiling above the restaurant, which also serves as the floor of the first-floor units.
Following the incident, residents above the restaurant have been evacuated while authorities investigate the building's structural integrity. - NST
