Rescuer urges action as animal abuse case sees no enforcement

An animal rescuer has urged authorities to act on alleged abuse against a brown poodle, saying multiple police reports and complaints have yet to yield any enforcement action.

Independent animal rescuer Kavitha Mahalingam said she and her team lodged reports after coming across videos on social media allegedly showing a man violently abusing the puppy named Qiu Qiu.

At least 10 police reports were lodged across several districts in Selangor, alongside multiple complaints to the Veterinary Services Department (DVS) between April 17 and April 21.

“At the moment, DVS said they can’t do anything because the man has left the house and it is up to the police to take action,” she told Malaysiakini yesterday.

However, Kavitha claimed there has been no follow-up so far, adding that none of the complainants has been called in to have their statements recorded.

When contacted, DVS told Malaysiakini that appropriate action will be taken for complaints submitted through official channels, adding that further developments will be communicated by the department.

Malaysiakini has also reached out to the Selangor police for comments.

Disturbing footage

Kavitha explained that the videos, which she first saw on Instagram on April 16, showed the dog being abused on two separate occasions.

The CCTV footage, dated March 22 and April 14, purportedly shows Qiu Qiu being thrown onto the floor and against a wall, causing visible distress and injury.

Deeply disturbed, Kavitha said she contacted the individual who uploaded the videos and was informed that the puppy had already been rescued in the early hours of April 17.

She then advised the rescuer to seek immediate treatment at a veterinary clinic in Puchong.

“The attending veterinarian conducted an X-ray examination and confirmed that the puppy had suffered a fracture to its right front leg.

“The doctor further stated that the injury was recent and had occurred within the past one week, and subsequently issued a written medical report to support these findings,” Kavitha said.

The animal rescuer added that Qiu Qiu has since undergone surgery and is now under her care.

She also alleged that additional information has surfaced suggesting the same individual may have been involved in several other animal abuse cases.

“However, no action was taken, as there was no video evidence,” she claimed. - Mkini
