KUALA LUMPUR: Umno's new online membership registration system has received an encouraging response, with 3,716 new members recorded in less than 24 hours since its launch.
Data shared by Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki showed that youth dominated the registrations, accounting for 2,413 people or 65 per cent of the total.
This was followed by 818 ordinary members (22 per cent), 248 from Wanita (seven per cent), and 237 from Puteri (six per cent).
Asyraf Wajdi said he personally reviewed and approved the applications after the system went live.
"Returning from the mosque this morning, I checked the Umno membership dashboard and took the time to scrutinise and approve each application.
"It is tiring but exciting because in less than 24 hours since the new online system was uploaded, 3,716 new members, the majority of whom are youth, have registered," he said in a Facebook post today.
On Sunday, Asyraf Wajdi announced that the Umno Supreme Council had amended the party's membership regulations to allow for online registration.
The move is aimed at facilitating the entry of new members, particularly the younger generation.
He said the amendment followed a two-week social media survey by Umno Youth and Puteri, which found that approximately 2,800 young people were interested in joining the party.
Asyraf Wajdi expressed his gratitude to those who chose to join the party, describing the development as a positive sign of interest in Umno's political struggle.
"Thank you to everyone for being willing to join this struggle," he said. - NST
